Alec Recher

Alecs Recher was born in Switzerland in 1975 under the name of Anja Recher. He is a teacher currently involved in politics, working as a communal counselor (deputy) in the canton of Zurich. Although he was born a woman, in September 2008 he declared in the media that he had begun a hormone treatment in order to undergo a definitive change of sex.

After that, he informed the other members of the communal parliament of his transformation process, asking them to consider him a man from that moment on.

Under Swiss law it is not possible to change identity unless you have concluded a process of sex reassignation, for which sterility is a previous step. Nevertheless, his symbolic presence is positive for other trans people who can identify themselves with his image and his initiative.

His political programme strives for the equality of the sexes and for the defense of the less favoured groups. The realm of political parties and decision taking should be represented by the great diversity of social identities in order to be more fair and equitative. More important than him being a satisfactory member of parliament, his presence is an indicator that the social spaces where trans people can participate are increasing, and his achievements can motivate other people to go on.
