Writing our own history - Latin american and Caribbean

In the fight for our human rights is not only important legal recognition but also the possibility to create simbolic references in which we could identify as a collective and a path to build our own story. In world history fights and wars for the supremacy of power were more important than the cotidianity of life, and only transcendet those who have access to the political power marginating all the rest.

This is a first step of a chronology of latinoamerican trans activists, share with the other sexual diversity demands. There is no information about this and is very importad that all of you help to build this history. The errors or mistakes are all ours because of the limitation of information. We are sure your contribution is going to be this challenge a goal.

Argentina [1]

1960-1970: First gays group have their own media resources.

1980: Argentine Homosexual Community (Comunidad Homosexual Argentina – CHA), first gay association to have legal recognition.

1987: First public appear of lesbians associations. Until this moment women only participated into feminist groups.

1991: First transvestite organization: Argentine Transvestite Association (Asociación de Travestis Argentinas – ATA). For some problems this group separeted in two: Organization of Transvestites and Transexuals of Argentina Republic (Organización de Travestis y Transexuales de la República Argentina – OTTRA) and Association for the Transvestite and Transexual Identity (Asociación de Lucha por la Identidad Travesti y Transexual – ALITT).

2001: Was created the Argentine Association of Transvestites Transexuals Transgenders (Asociación de Travestis Transexuales Transgéneros Argentinas - ATTTA).

Chile [2]

1980: Cultural permorfances made by Apocalypse Stallion (Yeguas del Apocalipsis) a group integrated by Pedro Lemebel and Francisco Casas, this actions were the first interventions of diversity groups in society.

1984: Lesbians created a organization call Ayuquelen Colectivity (Colectivo Ayuquelen), after the murdered of on of their activists, Mónica Briones.

1991: Appeared the Homosexual Liberation Movement (Movimiento de Liberación Homosexual).

1996: Sexteen homosexuals died in the fire at Divine discoteque in Valparaiso.

1998: The Sexual Minorities Movement (Movimiento Unificado de Minorías Sexuales – MUMS), reformulated their fundaments about sexual diversity.

2000: Was born the first Transvestites and Transgender Organization, Traves Chile.

Perú

1980: It is created the Homosexual Movement of Lima (Movimiento Homosexual de Lima – MHOL).

1984: Appeared the Group of Lesbian and Feminist Activists (Grupo de Activistas Lesbianas Feministas –GALF).

1985: A group of trans people began to share their experences and sometime later they call themself Red Carnation (Claveles Rojos).

Ecuador [3]

In this case, we have only names but not dates. It some books was mencioned “La Coccinelli” as the first organization of transvestites in Quito, but we don’t know the year of its creation. Other names mencioned are Alfil, association in which the president is transgender: Rashel Erazo, but we don’t know the history about this organizations.
