Basic chronology of LGBT movement in Mexico

In the Bulletin T-Informa N°2 (January 2008) we start with the chronology of LGBT movement in Latin American and include some information about Argentina, Peru, Chile and Ecuador. Unfortunately it was the only information we could get in that moment, it was a little but important in order to build some symbolic reference to the Trans community for the fight of recognition of human rights. We continue with that project and now we share a chronology of Mexico that could be a complement of the inform we already published. We also hope for yours contributions and suggestions.

Mexico

1978 A group of gays march October 2. It is also published The vampire of Roma district (El vampiro de la colonia Roma), by Luis Zapata.

1979 First March of Homosexual Pride in Mexico City. José Joaquín Blanco published Eyes that are afraid to dream (Ojos que da pánico soñar), that is adopted as a homosexual manifest.

1980 Second March of Homosexual Pride, in this there are about seven thousand people. FHAR (Homosexual Revolutionary Action Battlefront), Lambda and Oikabeth went into the Guadalupe’s Church in the procession for the murdered of the archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero, that become a commotion.

1981 The FAHR got dissolved. Rosario Ibarra was postulated by the Revolutionary Party of Workers (Partido Revolucionario de las y los Trabajadores, PRT) for president. It was created the Lesbian and Homosexual Committee in Support to Rosario Ibarra (Comité de Lesbianas y Homosexuales en Apoyo a Rosario Ibarra, CLHARI).

1982 Max Mejía, Pedro Preciado and Claudia Hinojosa are aspirant to federal delegate being openly gays. In campaign in Mexico Park is attack violently. Then it was made a festival to content with them.

1983 It was documented first cases of VIH/Aids in Mexico. The disease decline gay activism. Gays are discriminated as guilty of the VIH/Aids.

1984 Doña Herlinda and her son, by Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, is divulgated in a commercial way. The group Gay Community made the first Gay Cultural Week in Nobodies Café.

1985 Some organizations of homosexual that give support to people with Aids are created in this period.

1986 The few people that participate in the VII March of Gays and Lesbian are attack by the police.

1987 The Gay Cultural Week is transfer to Museum of Chopo. The First Meeting of Latin American and The Caribbean Lesbian are made in Mexico. It is created the National Coordination of Feminist Lesbian.

1990 It is created the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC).

1991 In Acapulco, Guerrero, is development the XIII Congress of International Gay and Lesbian Association, after being forbidden for the authorities of Guadalajara.

1992 In Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, have place the First Gay March, it was organize by local groups with the support of the Cultural Gay Club, in order to demand the resolution of the thirty crimes against transvestites happened since 1989.

1993 On May 23 pass away Francisco Galván, a supporter of the homosexual issues and of the rights of people who live with VIH/Aids. He was in charge of the magazine Aids and Society that was before Letter S.

1994 Nancy Cárdenas died, the pioneer of Movement of Homosexual Liberation; she was in charge of the play The guys of the band (Los chicos de la banda), that was very polemic.

1997 Patria Jiménez is elected as federal delegate of PRD. It is the first openly lesbian delegate.

1998 Legislative Board of Federal District made the First Legislative Forum about Sexual Diversity. It is created the Prize of Gay Merit. Joaquín Hurtado is the first that win this prize. It is also the year of Citizen Commission against Hate Crimes was created.

1999 Thousands of participants went to the XXI March of Lesbian and Gay Pride and get the Zocalo.

2000 During campaign for president, Vicente Fox called “mariquita” to Francisco Labastida Ochoa.

2001 Enoé Uranga, first lesbian delegate of Federal District, promoted a Societies of Living Law (Ley de Sociedades de Convivencia) that give legal support to couples of the same sex. In a symbolic action all the couples of the same sex that live go to registration in Palace of Beauty Arts. It was de anniversary of the famous detention of 41 homosexuals in Mexico. In the Museum of the Mexico City took place an event in their memory.

2003 The First Lesbian March took place in the capital zocalo. Societies of Living Law didn’t receive the necessary support to be approved. The Mexican Party present for the election about 30 and 40 lesbian, homosexuals and transgender for federal delegates. XXV March of LGBTT Pride.

2006 November 16, after four years, Federal Legislation approved the Societies of Living Law, with 43 votes in favour, 17 against and 5 abstinence.

2008 become a reality when August 29, Legislative Board approved it with 37 votes in favour and 17 against. Now transsexual, transgender and transvestite people could marriage in the Civil Registration and also ask for a new Born Act with their new identity. The Trans Law
