April 2010

Homosexuality itself is not pedophilia

These last two months of March and April have been convulsed. The most recent news has been the indictment of various representatives of the Catholic Church sex abuse, a situation that once again this institution wants to hide, instead of ensuring that the weight of the law falls on those responsible for such terrible acts. To confuse the population, they drive the problem to homosexuality as if homosexuality were synonymous of pedophilia. Hence it has raised a global campaign with the slogan "Homosexuality is not a crime, pedophilia yes" and also the motto of "conceal a crime, is also a crime". The Church finally takes responsibility for their members and take a more critical attitude of the positions assumed on society. Many strikes were held in several cities in the apostolic nunciatures against these facts. In Peru, it took place on Saturday April 24th ,and on on April 15th in Chile

Chickens are blamed

The following fact has captured the attention of the world. It has been the declaration of Evo Morales to whom the female hormones given to chickens, then ingested by people, would be the cause of homosexuality. Although President Evo Morales is a highly respected and loved by the great social changes that have occurred in Bolivia, the rejection of these statements were not long in coming and have issued several press releases about it, reminding him that Bolivia is committed to reject discrimination on sexual orientation and identity and as recent statements only accentuate the prejudice and ignorance.

Brazil ahead

Brazil is one of the most advanced countries in terms of rights for the LGBT community in Latin America. Thus, recently participated in the National Conference on Education (Conae) in the search for the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the national curriculum at all levels. No doubt that educating for change and respect is one of the most important steps towards a better future and so we highlight the progress of the LGBTI movement in Brazil In turn, we have to celebrate the publication of the digital version newspaper Lampião da Esquina, so it can be consulted by the general public. This is a newspaper that circulated from 1978 to 1981 to the population of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals in the military dictatorship. The newspaper at the time was outrageous and controversial because for the first time the issue was addressed directly and openly. These were 41 issues, 37 sequential and three extras. The dissemination of this valuable document was prepared by the Ministry of Culture by the Department of Cultural Identity and Diversity, as part of policies in this area promoted by the ministry. The restoration and digitization of the newspaper was paid by the state, in order to generate greater knowledge about LGBTI culture of Brazil and put in the hands of researchers, activists and general people in a forgotten part of the story of one of the saddest chapters history. The possibility of reconstruction of the historical development of the diverse identities is certainly an important symbolic and political support for current and future construction of these identities.

Also, Paraná signed a resolution for the respect of transvestites and transsexuals related to to public health services. This is an initiative that enforces the Federal Constitution which stipulates equality before the law without discrimination of any kind.

ILGA Asia Conference

The Conference of ILGA in the region of Asia to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia, was canceled by the police due to threats and fundamentalist religious groups that stroke against those involved with it, whereupon the authorities said they were not able to ensure physical integrity, as suggested they preferred to cancel the event. The Conference was planned to take place between March 26th and 28th 2010. In the past, ILGA Asia has successfully organized conferences in India, Philippines and Thailand. Its members include over 160 organizations from more than 17 Asian countries. Although it had the backing of the police, this was declined and with it also the hotels that had agreed to host the event participants. Faced with constant harassment and the arrival of the opposition groups I accept that definitely we had to cancel the meeting and ensure the safety of all participants, which were aroun 100 from over 12 countries. Finally the police provided protection for participants so that they could make their flight and return to their original countries, which had to be done immediately to the protests that unfolded in front of the hotel. When the fundamentalists were on board, they took advantage of most of the participants. The groups involved were planning a formal complaint for "activities against religion." Indonesia is requiring protection Protection measures for LGBTI people who live there justified by the membership of the UN, international treaties subscribed and respect without discrimination that has declared its constitution.

Abuses

Unfortunately, the crimes and abuses are also perpetuated every day in the trans population. WE have received a video showing mistreatment of trans activists by police in Chile. El Salvador has also reported several acts of violence and we demanded respect for the police.

Australia

This is the first country to recognize that it is possible not to specify gender in legal documents. This measure recognizes the systematic violation of the rights of trans people, the risk of violence and discrimination that have been suffering over time and according to the principles of equality as it seeks to replace or prevent acts of marginalization for this population . At the same time it includes other measures in pursuit of full citizenship for trans people and to safeguard their privacy and integrity.
