Synopsis:
Alex (Ines Efron) is a young person of 15 years who hides a secret. When she was born her parents decided to settle in an isolated hut in the outskirts of Piriápolis in Uruguay.
A couple of friends of her parents, come to visit them with their adolescent son Alvaro (Martin Piroyanski). The father of Alvaro is a plastic surgeon and accepted the opportunity to visit his friends because of his medical interest in Alex.
Between the young people arises a very strong attraction, which causes their parents to confront things they didn’t want to confront. The film portrays the story of Alex, as he crosses through an identity crisis to discover identity.
Commentary:
Alex’s parents live in tension because of the sexual identity of their daughter. On the one hand the mother looks for Alex to integrate in society like a woman, whereas the father prefers Alex can make the decision free of judgment.
Things become complicated when the mother invites their friend, a plastic surgeon and his family, with the intention to practice a sexual reassignment to Alex. With this visit arises a close friendship between Alvaro, the son of the surgeon, and Alex; nevertheless, the friendship derives in the sexual exploration, which allows Alvaro to explore his feminine side and Alex, the masculine, the relationship raises sexual identity questions in both adolescents.
The film challenges the binary scheme between the masculine and feminine, pleading for the free choice of the sexual identity, free from pressures of conventional schemes that society has set out. The plot not only attracts our attention but also informs us about the experiences of intersexual people.
