Pep Bonet’s photographs
The images are heartbreaking, boys into prostitution, transvestism and drug addiction; men and women that can’t find another way of surviving other than selling their bodies, their identities, their fantasies. In spite of all this, they can still smile, flirt and laugh. We realize that laughter and a certain kind of bliss is still possible there where we can only see shadows, pain, fear and death. That’s why these images could help us to understand the precarious condition of trans people, homosexuals and all social dissidents, but above all, to raise questions about what society allows and what still challenges it.
Through a creative, sincere and precise lens, Bonet offers us a new approach at the same dreary situation and misery which we know that a lot of our trans brothers and sisters go through, it shows us new faces for the theme of poverty. It shows us bodies with wounds, with scars, with voices that have been silenced and that shout their defenselessness at us.
