Good news about Sweden

This makes life difficult for many transpersons and forces them to out their trans status whenever asked to ID themselves which put them at risk to be victims of abuse and even violence.

A number of Swedish transactivists then decided to take the authorities denial of their right to legal name change to court. This week Kammarratten overturned the decision of the Lansratten (the County Court) do deny a young transman to legally change his name. In another case a transwoman apealed the authorities decision that she could not change her name to a female first name to Lansratten who overturned their decision and gave her the right to legally bear the name she is known by to most people.

The authorities then apealed the decison of Lansratten to Kammarratten who upheld the the decision by Lansratten.

The higest court in Sweden for these matters is Regeringsratten (Supreme Court for this types of legal issues) will probably uphold the court decisions or let the decisions become legal precedents.

Still there are no sign that the government and it christian democratic minister of social affairs Goran Hagglund will not go forward with the new law on legal gender change which will require castration of anyone whishing to have a legal gender change. This will severely worsen the situation for Swedens FtM:s and make it even more difficult for non TS transpersons to change their legal gender.

Swedens transpeople need a lot of support in this issue and it would be great if TGEU, ILGA and other would camapiagn aginst this breach of human rights!
