A summary about the Stop Pathologizing Campaign in 2009

On october 17th, in differents parts of the world and simultaneously, there were actions against trans pathologizing. Belissa Andía, from the ILGA Secretary, remembers how this campaign was created and the importance of thinking about the reinforcement of the dialogue and the debate about this topic.

Personalities: Herculine Barbin
He was born in Saint-Jean-d’Angely in 1838 and died in Paris in 1868. This is about a french intersex person, who at birth was defined as a woman, but later as a male, after a physical examination. His life comes to light with the publication of his autobiography Memoirs of Herculine Adelaide Barbin.

We analyze the situation of Caster Semenya whose status was quiestioned because of its great success in the late regional and international powers (2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, 2009 African Junior Championships and the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009) imposing the best record of the year for the 800 meter dash.

This is about an interesting collection which includes various items that reflect about trans and intersex identitie. The book is an interesting and thoughtful overview of trans identities, from different voices, experiences and positions, which are worth reading and putting into considerations.

Campaign: ILGA-LAC Regional Conference (2010)
ILGA’s 5th Latin American and Caribbean Regional Conference will be held in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, on January 27th to 30th 2010. This Conference and other pre-Conference events aim to define strategies for the promotion of human rights, citizenship, health and culture of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender and intersex people in the Latin American and Caribbean Region for the period 2010-2012.
